Which documents are required to obtain a citizen service number (BSN)?
I‘m Portuguese and I have now a contract with a Dutch university beginning on the 1st of April. I know I need to request a citizen service number in the town hall, but I‘m not sure of the documents that I need to take with me. Could you help me with that? Thank you.
To obtain a BSN you must indeed be registered in the municipality registration (GBA). When you register you will automatically get a BSN, it may be sent to you by post at a later moment.
To register you will have to show up in person and bring the following documents with you:
- a valid identity paper
- a contract which shows that you have rented or bought a property where you will live or written permission of the person who allows you to live in his/her property together with a copy of the identity paper of this person
- certificate of birth
- if applicable, a valid residence permit or proof that you have applied for a residence permit
- if applicable, your foreign marriage certificate, partnership certificate, divorce certificate or death certificate of your partner
If you also want to register your partner and/or children, they will have to come to the town hall too and provide their personal identity paper.
You can check the website of the municipality first if they require more documents from you.
