Tax for married people. Will tax on my income be higher if my partner finds a job?

Dear Madame/Sir,

I am a skilled immigrant. I would like to know if my wife finds a job, will my salary tax be increased or not?

Thank you.

Your salary is taxed individually. If your wife will get a job it will not affect the tax withholding on your salary. You will pay tax based on the applicable tax rates and so will your wife. The salaries will not be combined to determine the tax rate, they will be kept separately.

Currently your wife can claim the tax credit for a partner without income. When she gets a job this credit will be included in the calculation of the tax which needs to be withheld on her salary. So if she is receiving a provisional refund for this credit at the moment, it will have to be cancelled.
