I am an EU national. Do I need a permit to live in the Netherlands?

From 1 May 2006 onwards, citizens of EU or EEA member states or Switzerland who wish to stay in the Netherlands for more than three months have to register with the Immigration and Naturalization Department (IND), which can be done through the local municipality.

Since it is not required anymore, a residence permit will no longer be issued.

Who needs to register?

You should register with the IND if:
  • you have the nationality of one of the EU or EEA member states or Switzerland
  • you have been living in the Netherlands for more that 3 months or plan to do so, and
  • you are living in the Netherlands because you are working (either employed or self employed), you are studying or you have other means of sustenance even though you are not working.

You should also register if you wish to stay in the Netherlands with your Dutch spouse or partner.

Registration with the IND is free of charge and they will give you a ‘registration certificate’ by means of a sticker in your passport. This is valid throughout the validity of your passport. Whenever you get your passport renewed contact the IND for a new sticker.

Please note that you must have first registered at your local municipality before registering with the IND.
