I live in NL but am to receive an inheritance from the UK. Will I need to pay tax on the inheritance in the Netherlands?

Question

Hi, I would like to know if you can advise me on inheritance tax. I live in NL but am to receive an inheritance form the UK.

Answer

We are not specialized in inheritance tax. However generally inheritance tax is paid in the country where the person who died was living at that time. In the Netherlands additional tax is then not taxed.

my aunt in the netherlands died 13 years ago. the executor refused to show me a copy of the will despite sending me a small amount of money. she indicated that the will is not public. how do i get access to the will and is there a statute of limitations on issues of this type? can you recommend a good attorney or law firm that deals with these types of dutch matters possibly in the united states or in the netherlands.thank you, marc

You can contact a civil notary who can act on your behalf and arrange a copy of the will or you can contact the central will registration ("centraal testamenten register") in writing to request them to inform you whether there is a will and which notary created the will. Together with the request you must include a statement from the municipality (where you aunt died) which confirms the death of your aunt.
