How long will I have to keep my tax records available for the Dutch tax authorities?

Question:

It has been some years since I left the Netherlands.

Looking through my files, I have kept receipts and records dating back to 2003. I am just wondering if the time is coming that I can start to dispose of these? What are my obligations in terms of how long I have to keep them and be able to produce them if the Belastingdienst demands?

Answer:

Officially you need to keep your records for 7 years. But if you have received a final tax assessment for a year you can assume that the year is closed and you will not be contacted anymore for that year.
