How do I become eligible for social security benefits?

In order to be eligible for social security you must first have registered with the municipality. You must then apply to your local tax authorities for a social security/tax number (Burger Service Nummer). You will find the address in your local telephone directory (search for belastingdienst).

Employees do not need to contact social security themselves. It is down to the employer to complete the formalities to ensure that their employees are covered. Only when it comes to choosing an insurance company for health insurance does the initiative rest with individuals.

Persons setting up on a self-employed basis should file a tax return to ensure that their social security contributions are deducted.
