Car expenses: can I claim a tax refund for car expenses incurred by driving from my home to my work?

Question:

I live in Brussels but work in Holland. Can I claim a tax refund for car expenses?

Answer:

No, there is no deduction possible for car expenses. Your employer may reimburse tax free € 0.19 per kilometre to you, but it is not possible to claim a deduction instead if your employer doesn‘t want to pay you a travel allowance.

Costs are only deductible if you travel by public transport or if your income is considered to be self employed income and not employment income. In this situation the car expenses can be business expenses.
